Hey there, you – the one ruminating over changing the world, dreaming big, and wanting to take risks for Jesus.
I suppose, like me, you’ve been told once or twice or a hundred times to just take it easy. Slow it down. Don’t be such an extremist. In fact, things just are the way they are just because, and that’s that.
Maybe you too have been told that you “have a fire in the belly.”
That fire is real, though, isn’t it? And, it’s God-given, I believe. The world and the Church need people with vision and passion that speed up some heart rates and makes the pews less comfy.
But, here’s what I want to tell you today:
Being all lit up over something isn’t the point. It’s about being lit up over someOne.
Those flames in your belly? Friend, they’ll burn up and burn out without a steady source, one beyond your own goodness and determination and social justice plans. How I know this to be true.
Those holy flames must be built on a cross soaked in sacrifice and nestled in an empty grave where Jesus’ heart beats strong enough to echo throughout your life.
You need to stay warmed daily by this blazing Source, Jesus Christ. And, when distractions and obligations and pressures crowd in, you’ll need to beat your way back to the Source. He’s that important. Let your soul be amazed continually at how He works and how He loves.
“Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.” Hebrews 12:1-2 (emphasis mine)
And, that passion He’s lit up in you? He owns it and He’ll redeem it, washing away remnants of self and pride.
You’ll see then that it’s really not about changing the world. It’s not even about making a difference.
It’s about clinging closely to the One who draws you to Himself. It’s about loving the One whose love will not let you go. It’s about responding to the One who has claimed your life and sacrificially pursued your soul.
And then, with your soul awe-struck by Truth and humbled by Grace, you’ll understand:
My fellow world-changer, you’ll understand that the world in need of changing is first your own.
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:13-14
Stay there, World-Changer, in that humbled place. It’s the place where your eyes are torn from what you can do for Him, and they finally just settle, transfixed on Him, the beloved Son, who redeems, forgives, and transfers you from darkness to a bright, new kingdom.
It’s the place where your head bows and your hands lift up in worship. It’s the place where you realize you can’t help but respond, in light of such a powerful Love.
When your world gets changed like that, that’s when Jesus starts glorifying Himself through you. He starts where Self ends.
So, seek Him with your everything. Cling to Him as your source.
And shine on, my friend – but never forget it’s your world that’s been changed. Let that reminder set your soul ablaze for His glory. May your eyes remain steady on Jesus and your life covered in His grace.
Because, if you really want to change the world, your life must declare that Jesus changed yours.
